Hart of Dixie | 204 | “Suspicious Minds”

Wade (Wilson Bethel) and Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) of Hart of Dixie

Again, I say it’s great that Hart of Dixie continues to give the people what they want. And what they want is a shirtless Wilson Bethel. Zoe and Wade are still having a lot of casual sex, but Zoe doesn’t understand the casual bit. This episode mostly felt like a retread of many past episodes – Zoe got jealous (for no reason) and went on a date to make Wade jealous. At least it ended with some progression: they’re now going to be casual, monogamously. Continue reading

The Pilot Test: “Emily Owens, M.D.”

Emily Owens, M.D.
Tuesday | 9:00 pm | The CW

I’m glad I waited a second week to post a review of Emily Owens, M.D. The first episode had me cringing on more occasions than actually enjoying it, but as is the CW’s way, the show grew on me like a teen soapy fungus until I was pretty much enamored by the end of episode two. Continue reading

The Walking Dead | 302 | “Sick”

Although many people jonesing for the Woodbury plotline to get going already were probably disappointed, myself included, I still enjoyed this episode. It proved that the crazy uptick in quality of the season 3 opener was no anomaly, and that the prison is definitely not going to be anything like the farm. But really, the more important part of this episode was that the writers have apparently conceded that T-Dog really is the worst name ever. Unfortunately, the only way to abbrev T-Dog is T. The Walking Dead | 301 | “Seed”

Last night’s season 3 premiere of The Walking Dead felt like a love letter and an apology to all the fans who managed to make it through the stultifying mess that was season 2. Practically every annoyance that I – and everyone else – harped on in season 2 was resolved. (You can find my old recaps on the Weekend Watchers blog here.) Instead of endless, pointless arguing, we got a incredibly tense opener with no dialogue whatsoever. Carl, whose had Tumblrs devoted to his inability to STAY PUT, not only did what he was told, but is now allowed to carry a gun and be useful. Lori is still the worst, but now everyone else agrees, basically, and there was 1000% less speechifying. And rather than going for weeks at a time with one or two measly zombies, we were treated to a satisfying, and ruthlessly efficient zombie murder spree, so much so that I have to retire my Walker Kill Count from an inability to keep track of all of them. And all this is kicking off the most iconic arc of the comic books. Can we say excited? Continue reading

The Pilot Test: “Beauty and the Beast”

Beauty and the Beast
Thursday | 9:00 pm | The CW

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to like Beauty and the Beast. While it’s one of my favorite Disney films, I was skeptical about this particular version. Kristin Kreuk’s wooden acting was one of my strongest memories from my love/hate Smallville days, and I’ve really had my fill of cop dramas besides. I’m not saying that I particularly loved the pilot, but it at least surprised me by being enjoyable in some parts. Continue reading

The Pilot Test: “Arrow”

Arrow
Wednesday | 8:00 pm | The CW

The CW has pretty much been my spirit animal since its creation in 2006; I’ve devotedly watched pretty much everything they’ve had to offer. Each year has its good and bad (take 2009: it brought us The Vampire Diaries and TBL: The Beautiful Life) and I was expecting Arrow to be one of the more promising offerings this year. Depending on where your expectation level is, I think I was right, probably? Continue reading
